Segmentation of MR brain images with bias artifact

2009

Brain MR Images corrupted by RF- Inhomogeneity (bias artifact) exhibit brightness variations across the image. As a consequence, a standard Fuzzy C-Means (fern) segmentation algorithm may fail. In this work we show a new general-purpose bias removing algorithm, which can be used as a pre-processing step for a fern segmentation. We also compare our experimental results with the ones achieved by using E2 D - H U M filter, showing an improvement in brain segmentation and bias removal.

A portable instrument for the location and identification of defects generating PD

2011

A portable instrument based on an antenna probe and suitable for partial discharge detection, have been characterized through both laboratory and on-site experiments carried out on coils and stator windings of ac rotating machines. The antenna probe allows the capture of electromagnetic waves in a bandwidth of 0.1–100 MHz. Pulse signals and ac supply voltage reference are obtained by means of high-pass and low-pass filters, respectively, so avoiding the need of a direct connection with the objects under test. By this way, real-time phase resolved partial discharge patterns can be derived. Results of a comparison of the diagnostic information provided by PD patterns due to conducted and irra…

Accommodative stimulus-response curves to low-pass filtered natural images

2018

To assess how the monocular steady-state accommodative stimulus-response curve is modified when viewing low-pass filtered natural images. Eighteen adult subjects participated in the study. The accommodative stimulus-response curve was objectively assessed by means of a Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensor. Measurements were taken at different accommodative demands. Target images were low-pass filtered versions of a natural image that were obtained applying different digital spatial filters that limited the spatial frequency content of the natural image. Cutoff spatial frequencies were set at 30, 21, and 15 cycles per degree (cy/deg). Mean data obtained for each target were fitted to linear model…

Narrowband digital filtering with random frequency hopping spread spectrum

2014

International audience; In digital signal filtering, channels with narrow bandwidth need high order digital filter to be selected without introducing modulation errors. If a carrier randomly switches from a channel to another as in military applications, or some civilian communication standards, it is necessary to detect and estimate these jumps before transposing and analyzing signals in the baseband. This paper presents a real time solution to filter narrow band signals with random frequency hopping spread spectrum. The proposed method is based on three steps. Firstly, the detection of Signal Frequency Hopping (SFH) using the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), an algorithm to estimate the Domi…

LabVIEW modeling and simulation, of the low-pass and high-pass analog filters

2015

Some programs for simulating different types of filters are developed using LabView software. Implementing a simulation program of an analog filter requires the prior establishment of mathematical model. As a general purpose programming environment, LabVIEW offers possibility of achieving some user programs for plotting frequency characteristics of passive and active analog filters, if established beforehand mathematical models that characterize their behavior. The scientific objectives of this paper are: -the analysis of the possibilities of using virtual instrumentation in the study of electrical filters; -implementation of virtual instruments for analysis and simulation of analog filters…

Novel Narrow-Band Spectral Interference Filter with Very High Transmittance

2011

We report a novel scheme to improve the effective transmission of a standard interference filter, and demonstrate over 97% passband transmission. Such high efficiency is critical for quantum information applications, e.g. high-efficiency single-photon generation utilizing parametric down-conversion. The scheme can also be modified to function with a tilted filter, thereby allowing tuning of the passband frequency. In addition, the tilted configuration creates an infinite number of consecutive reflections from and transmissions through the filter, further improving the net filter transmission. Because spectral interference filters are a key element in optical quantum information experiments …

Phase Margin Degradation of a Peak Current Controlled Converter at Reduced Duty Cycle

2010

An inner current loop is frequently used in many switching power supplies to achieve higher stability and a good current sharing. Nevertheless, some problems derived from its practical implementation can be encountered. One problem is related to the need of filtering of the sensed current and was discovered by the authors in the implementation of a 500 W converter, when peak current control was applied by sensing the switch current. This paper will demonstrate mathematically that an RC filter not only filters out the noise but also can cause a degradation of the phase margin, especially, if the needed duty cycle is close to zero. The main reason for it is the severe distortion of the curren…

A low-pass velocity filter for ultracold neutrons

2012

Abstract We have built a device to filter ultracold neutrons with axial velocities v n ≤ 8.0 m / s from faster neutrons. The apparatus has been successfully tested at the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble and is used in specific experiments, e.g., the measurement of ultracold neutron transmission through various types of neutron guides.
